Show calculation steps

Calculate the tip on the bill, then split the total. A per-person amount is rounded to cents and may leave a small reconciliation difference.

Formula

r = (x + round(x × p ÷ 100, 2)) ÷ n

Calculation steps

  1. ⁦75⁩ × ⁦18⁩ ÷ ⁦100⁩ ≈ ⁦13.5⁩
  2. ⁦75⁩ + ⁦13.5⁩ = ⁦88.5⁩
  3. ⁦88.5⁩ ÷ ⁦1⁩ ≈ ⁦88.5⁩

How to work out a tip

Multiply the bill by the tip percentage as a decimal. 18% of $75 is 75 × 0.18 = $13.50, so the total is $88.50.

For a quick estimate in your head, start with 10% by moving the decimal point one place left. On a $46.50 bill, 10% is $4.65, half of that again is about $2.33, and together they make 15%, about $6.98. Doubling 10% gives 20%: $9.30.

Splitting the bill

Add the tip to the bill, then divide by the number of people. $84 with a 20% tip is $100.80, or $25.20 each for four people.

Sometimes the total doesn’t divide evenly into cents. $100 split three ways is $33.33 each, which adds up to $99.99. The calculator tells you when this happens so that one person can cover the extra cent.

Before or after tax?

The calculator tips on the amount you enter. If you want to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, enter that figure rather than the total. The difference is the tip rate applied to the tax. With 8% tax and a 20% tip, tipping on the total adds 1.6% of the subtotal, which is $1.60 on a $100 bill.

Service charges

If the bill already includes a service charge, the restaurant has added a percentage for you. Check what it covers before adding a tip on top.
