    Understand the calculation

    Adding sales tax

Multiply the price by the rate as a decimal to get the tax, then add it on. At 8%, tax on $49.99 is $3.9992, which rounds to $4.00, for a total of $53.99. Or multiply by 1.08 in one step.

Removing sales tax from a total

Divide the total by 1 plus the rate. A receipt total of $85.60 at 7% tax had a pre-tax price of 85.60 ÷ 1.07 = $80.00, and the tax was $5.60.

Subtracting 7% of $85.60 gives $79.61, which is wrong, because the tax was 7% of the lower pre-tax price.

    Which rate to use

US sales tax is set by states and often by counties, cities and special districts as well, so the rate depends on where the sale happens and sometimes on what is sold. When several rates apply, they are usually added together into one combined rate. Check your state’s revenue department for the current rate. This calculator does the arithmetic, not the tax rules.

    Rounding

Tax is calculated on the full amount and rounded to the cent before it’s added. Stores that tax and round each item separately can end up a cent different on a long receipt.
